Sponge
A sponge is a disk-shaped polyurethane device containing the spermicide nonoxynol-9.
How does the sponge work?
The sponge fits inside the vagina and covers the cervix to block sperm from reaching the egg. The spermicide within it kills the sperm . It is inserted before intercourse and must be left in place for at least six hours after intercourse. It is discarded after use.
There is a 14 to 28% chance of pregnancy and the sponge does not protect against std's.
What are the side effects?
- irritation and allergic reactions
- risk of toxic shock syndrome, a rare but serious infection
