Diaphragms
A diaphragm is a dome-shaped rubber disk with a flexible rim that fits inside the vagina and covers the cervix.
How does the diaphragm work?
The diaphragm blocks the sperm from reaching the egg. A spermicide is applied to the diaphragm before insertion. It is inserted before intercourse and left in place for at least six hours afterwards.
There is a 17% chance of pregnancy and the diaphragm does not protect against std's.
What are the side effects?
- irritation and allergic reactions
- urinary tract infections
- risk of toxic shock syndrome, a rare but serious infection
